Dr. Mary F. Ehrlander

Professor of History and Arctic and Northern Studies, Emeritus

WHEREAS Dr. Mary F. Ehrlander has served the ϳԹ with distinction in teaching, research and public service from 2001 to 2020; and

WHEREAS Dr. Ehrlander’s students praise her high standards, academic rigor and thorough teaching style, while noting her accessibility and willingness to assist; and she received the Emil Usibelli Distinguished Teaching Award in 2016; and she served as chair of twenty-five graduate student committees and as a member of thirty-six others; and

WHEREAS Dr. Ehrlander, since joining UAF, has written five books, several book chapters and numerous articles and papers; and she has written and presented on diverse topics such as education reform, policies and cultural issues surrounding alcohol use, and the politics of oil in Alaska; and

WHEREAS Dr. Ehrlander organized numerous conferences, panel discussions, seminars and lectures on public issues in Alaska and the North; and she directed UAF’s Arctic and Northern studies program; and she served on numerous University committees; and

WHEREAS Dr. Ehrlander has received multiple awards for her work, including both the Alaska Historical Society’s James H. Drucker Historian of the Year Award and the Alaska Library Association’s Alaskana Award in 2018 for the biography “Walter Harper: Alaska Native Son”;

NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED that the ϳԹ expresses its deep appreciation for Dr. Mary F. Ehrlander’s extensive contributions to the State of Alaska and to the University; and

BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that the ϳԹ, in further recognition of the invaluable services rendered by Dr. Ehrlander and as evidence of the University’s desire that her identification with the University be maintained, hereby salutes the recognition of Dr. Mary F. Ehrlander as Professor of History and Arctic and Northern Studies, Emeritus; and

BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that this resolution be appropriately engrossed and signed by the Chancellor of the ϳԹ as further evidence of the esteem and respect in which he holds Dr. Mary F. Ehrlander, and conveyed to Dr. Ehrlander on this first day of May, 2021.
