Dr. Rainer J. Newberry
Professor of Geology, Emeritus
WHEREAS Dr. Rainer J. Newberry served the ºÚÁϳԹÏÍø with distinction in teaching, research and public service from 1982 to 2020; and
WHEREAS Dr. Newberry is an award-winning teacher who gave students a constant source of help in classes, research and training; and his courses were popular and well rated; and he chaired more than forty graduate committees and was a member for many more; and
WHEREAS Dr. Newberry, whose specialty is economic geology, has authored or co-authored approximately one hundred eighty-five book chapters, peer-reviewed journal articles, reports and maps; and he has worked internationally in studies of critical mineral resources; and
WHEREAS Dr. Newberry’s work with geology-related industries and state and federal agencies has contributed to the development of Alaska’s resources and workforce; and his participation in the annual Science Potpourri and his visits to local schools have inspired and educated young people throughout the community; and he served twenty-one years with the Faculty Senate and on numerous university committees; and
WHEREAS Dr. Newberry received the 2003 Emil Usibelli Distinguished Teaching Award, which recognized the creativity and enthusiasm he brought to his classes;
NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED that the ºÚÁϳԹÏÍø expresses its deep appreciation to Dr. Rainer J. Newberry for his extensive contributions to the State of Alaska and to the University; and
BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that the ºÚÁϳԹÏÍø, in further recognition of the invaluable services rendered by Dr. Newberry and as evidence of the University’s desire that his identification with the University be maintained, hereby salutes the appointment of Dr. Rainer J. Newberry as Professor of Geology, Emeritus; and
BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that this resolution be appropriately engrossed and signed by the Chancellor of the ºÚÁϳԹÏÍø as further evidence of the esteem and respect in which he holds Dr. Rainer J. Newberry, and conveyed to Dr. Newberry on this first day of May, 2021.
