Dr. Brenda Norcross

Professor of Fisheries, Emeritus

WHEREAS Dr. Brenda Norcross served the ºÚÁϳԹÏÍø with distinction in teaching, research and public service from 1989 to 2020; and

WHEREAS Dr. Norcross taught primarily graduate level courses while advising thirty-eight graduate students to completion of their degrees; and her students have found successful careers in state, federal and university faculty research positions; and

WHEREAS Dr. Norcross came to UAF just prior to the 1989 Exxon Valdez oil spill, and her research from that era still informs oil spill prevention, planning and response efforts in Alaska and around the world; and her diverse work, from Southeast Alaska to the Arctic Ocean, has illuminated environmental influences on dozens of fish and invertebrate species; and she garnered approximately $27 million in research funding and produced eighty peer-reviewed publications; and

WHEREAS Dr. Norcross’ expertise and knowledge is widely sought, and she has served many years on the North Pacific Fisheries Management Council’s groundfish plan team, on the National Research Council’s Arctic oil spill committee and on scientific committees for the North Pacific Marine Science Organization; and she has volunteered in multiple roles in the university and Fairbanks communities;

NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED that the ºÚÁϳԹÏÍø expresses its deep appreciation to Dr. Brenda Norcross for her extensive contributions to the State of Alaska and to the University; and

BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that the ºÚÁϳԹÏÍø, in further recognition of the invaluable services rendered by Dr. Norcross and as evidence of the University’s desire that her identification with the University be maintained, hereby salutes the appointment of Dr. Brenda Norcross as Professor of Fisheries, Emeritus; and

BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that this resolution be appropriately engrossed and signed by the Chancellor of the ºÚÁϳԹÏÍø as further evidence of the esteem and respect in which he holds Dr. Brenda Norcross, and conveyed to Dr. Norcross on this first day of May, 2021.
