Mission Statement
The Department of Mathematics and Statistics at the ºÚÁϳԹÏÍø advances and disseminates knowledge through undergraduate and graduate degree programs and service courses, research resulting in peer-reviewed publications, and public and professional service.
ºÚÁϳԹÏÍøThe Fairbanks campus, established in the early 1900s, was the first unit of the University of Alaska system. It is the primary residential university, houses the system's administrative seat, offers the only doctoral level degrees, and provides the only graduate programs in the mathematical sciences. The 2,250-acre Fairbanks campus serves about 6,000 students of whom 8% are graduate students; all of UAFs campuses serve over 9,000 students. The campus is located on a ridge overlooking the City of Fairbanks and the Tanana River Valley. Several scientific research institutes of national and international renown are located on campus. A number of state and federal agencies also maintain research facilities here. For more about UAF, please see about UAF. |
CommunityThe City of Fairbanks, located four miles east of campus, is the trade center for Interior Alaska. ºÚÁϳԹÏÍø 90,000 people live in the area. Road and rail transportation give easy access to the Alaska Range and to many of the towns and cities of Alaska. To the north are the Yukon River and the rugged Brooks Range, with the oil-rich North Slope beyond. There are many excellent cultural and recreational facilities in the area. Denali National Park is about a 2 hour drive to the south. Several lakes, rivers, and hot springs are nearby. For more about the community, please see |
FacultyAs a member of the Department of Mathematics and Statistics you will associate with the top faculty and students in Alaska. Departmental faculty members have received awards for freshman teaching excellence and have won the prestigious Usibelli Award, the highest teaching award in the state. Departmental faculty members have also received the Carol Feist Advising Award. Faculty engage actively in research. Current research strengths in the department include mathematical biology, control theory, mathematical physics, experimental design, numerical analysis, combinatorics, graph theory, data swapping, algebraic statistics, measurement error models, non-parametric statistics, multicultural education, and operator theory. |
ResourcesThe Department of Mathematics and Statistics maintains a mathematics study lab on the third floor of the Chapman building, in Chapman 305. Students at all levels are encouraged to work on homework problems, study for tests, or get extra help in the Math Lab. The Math Lab is open seven days a week during the academic year, and is staffed by faculty members and graduate and undergraduate students eager to help anyone learn mathematics or statistics. The Department of Mathematics and Statistics shares a computer lab in Chapman 103 with the Department of Computer Science. This lab is connected via the campus network to an array of computational resources. Mathematical and statistical software packages are available on the computers there for students enrolled in courses with a computing component. The Elmer E. Rasmuson Library has extensive and comprehensive holdings in mathematics and statistics. |
CostsThe Department of Mathematics and Statistics awards teaching assistantships on the basis of merit. Duties include classroom instruction, paper grading, and/or student consultation, normally requiring 20 hours per week. The academic year stipend for a teaching assistant is competitive. Research assistantships may also be available for sponsored research. Tuition is waived for teaching and research assistants. Please see for details on stipend amounts.
